Finished Surfaces

Finished surfaces refer to how many sides of the monument will be finished in a specific way. This will be determined by the design you choose and the look you're going for. Below are some of the terms you may see in regard to your monument's finished surfaces, using the polished finish as an example.


  • P2- Polished two sides: front and back
  • P3- Polished three sides: front, back and top
  • P4- Polished four sides: front, back and both ends
  • P5- Polished five sides (All Polished): front, back, top and both ends

There are many finishes and terms that you may see when designing a monument. Below are some terms you may want to be familiar with throughout the process.


  • BRP- Balance Rock Pitch
  • BS- Balance Sawn
  • SS- Sawn Sides
  • PFT- Polished Flat Top
  • SFT- Steeled Flat Top
  • PBT- Polished Bevel Top
  • PSF- Polished Slant Face
  • FN- Front Nosing; this is the finished portion on the bottom front of a Standard Slant
  • NFN- No Front Nosing; also known as a Western Slant, the polished face continues to the bottom
  • Margin- Polished or sawn border around the top of a base, usually one to two inches
  • Pencil Round- Slight radius or polished or honed stone around the top of the marker
